Diamond Unleashed

Diamond has leadership qualities, demonstrated as she took two other unleashed dogs along with her on her first adventure. Being part Border Collie, they may have been herded instead of volunteering. Anyway they are the only ones that know the truth, and they weren’t speaking.

Off she runs towards one of her favorite things, WATER. She literally went up the creek without a paddle.

Diamond has a ying and yang to her. The ying is the herding instinct. The yang is the hunting instinct. Being part Treeing Walker  Coonhound, she is eager to please, loving, intelligent and confident, and makes a splendid companion dog. That’s the good news.

The bad news at a camp where the dogs are unleashed, is the Treeing Walker Coonhound part of Diamond’s family tree will disregard most commands when on a scent. And when Diamond is outside, she is on scent. The nose action never stops.

Of course, we don’t hunt anything, except maybe an occasional bargain or digging up the coolest of canine toys or information. But genetics is why she literally has selective hearing, and has no road sense at all.

More on camp tomorrow…

In the meantime, if you have a mixed breed and are curious take the “What’s My Dog? Breed Game” at whatsmydog.com. Of course, DNA testing is the only way to solve the puzzle for sure, but trying to identify your dog’s mix is a fun way to spend some time. If you have a mixed breed, have you considered DNA testing?
